About Vernon Brownlee

Potential Defense Strategies to Criminal Charges

Every criminal case is different. Even when two defendants face the same charges, the evidence is different, and the outcomes can vary greatly. A wide range of outcomes are possible, from a dismissal, acquittal, reduction of charges, to a conviction. A dedicated legal representative will review the prosecution’s evidence and take the time to get to know the case and the defendant to craft a customized defense strategy. With that knowledge, we could craft a defense strategy customized to the defendant’s individual case.

Although the prosecution has the burden of proving the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, legal counsel sometimes believes a strong offensive approach is the best defense. We can review the facts and challenge the prosecution’s case by casting doubt on the individual elements of the crime. For instance, in a theft crime relying on the testimony of one eyewitness, an attorney could introduce evidence showing the witness made the identification in the dark from a far distance. In a domestic violence case, a legal representative could investigate the accuser’s motivation for making the abuse allegation.

We could look for alibis to prove the defendant was not at the crime scene and other evidence to dispute the prosecution’s claims. We could also examine the police and prosecution’s procedures to see if they violated any of the defendant’s constitutional rights. A criminal defense attorney in Upper Marlboro could work tirelessly and effectively to fight the charges with the best possible defense strategies.
